We all need a bit of support from our communities, a need for connection and care that can come from the smallest act of kindness to a larger display of selfless concern, whether it's from volunteering, donating to charity or lending a helping hand to someone in need.

According to a list compiled by WalletHub, North Carolina is home to a couple of the "most caring" cities in the entire country, though five Tar Heel State locales total made the list:

  • No. 32: Raleigh
  • No. 50: Charlotte
  • No. 62: Durham
  • No. 88: Greensboro
  • No. 93: Winston-Salem

Coming in at No. 32 overall, Raleigh earned a spot near the top of the list thanks to its high ranking in the caring for the community category. The city even has one of the highest percentages of population who do favors for their neighbors.

These are the top 10 most caring cities in America, according to WalletHub:

  1. Virginia Beach, Virginia
  2. Scottsdale, Arizona
  3. Boston, Massachusetts
  4. Gilbert, Arizona
  5. Chesapeake, Virginia
  6. Fremont, California
  7. San Diego, California
  8. Madison, Wisconsin
  9. Colorado Springs, Colorado
  10. Plano, Texas

To determine its list, WalletHub compared the 100 most populated cities around the U.S. across three factors: caring for the community, caring for the vulnerable and caring in the workforce. These factors were then evaluated using 38 relevant metrics, including violent crime rate, driving fatalities per capita, civic engagement, favors for neighbors, share of income donated to charity, volunteering hours per capita, child and adult poverty rates, adoption rate, animal protection laws raking, physicians per capita, paramedics per capita, teachers' care for students' well-being and more.
